For people without periodontitis:
1. Brush your teeth twice a day, every day.
The foundation of any oral hygiene routine is brushing your teeth, twice a day. Use a fluoride toothpaste and spend two minutes brushing every tooth surface. This helps remove bacterial plaque. If bacterial plaque is left in your mouth for more than 24 hours it could cause cavities and gum disease.
2. Floss at least once a day.
Flossing removes food particles and place between your teeth where a toothbrush can’t reach. Regular flossing prevents gum disease. Dr. Chen flosses after every meal she eats!
3. Go to the dentist for checkups and cleanings every 6 months.
In addition to brushing your teeth after you wake up and before you go to bed, you should brush your teeth after every meal.
Floss after every meal, this will help remove food particles and place from between your teeth.
Use mouthwash twice a day, every day. An antiseptic mouthwash reduces bacteria and freshens your breath. Swish with mouthwash after brushing your teeth in the morning and night.
Use interproximal brushes and waterpik. These tools can help you clean the areas that are hard to clean with just brushing and flossing.
Visit your dentist every 3 to 6 months for checkups and cleanings.
Try to limit sweets and sugary drinks. These foods and drinks can cause plaque to build up. Chew sugar free gum, this stimulates saliva production, which is a natural way our bodies clean our mouths and neutralize acids. Don’t smoke or vape, smoking can intensify gum disease and it overall negatively impacts your oral health.
